This image came to me while I was working on another painting — this is what I look like, who I am, to myself, especially as an artist. What is within animates the without. This is a self portrait, the stylized reverberations of light behind my eyes and face. Though I started with some cut out photos, it is heavily reworked and re-imagined in oil paint's thick, fleshy colors and body. Modern technologies and medical/biological understandings of our internal selves fascinate me, from brain-imaging scans to the latest research into the chemical workings of our cells. And yet this is only one way of trying to understand what we are. I am happy to sense the vastness of what we reach to understand.
